shaneris5 replied: "View the information and weblinks for social anxiety/shyness, and self confidence, in sections 9, and 38, at Here is an exercise that can help you. It is called "Act as If." When you are in a social situation, act as if you are outgoing. Talk more, smile at everyone, ask questions, speak in a normal or excited tone, not a meek tone. Watch some of your outgoing peers, and imitate the style of their social behavior. (I PRETEND that I'm an ACTOR, PLAYING a PART).
Research shows that when you "act as if" continually, your image of yourself begins to conform to your new behavior. In this case, you will gain self-esteem and self-confidence, and begin to see yourself as socially normal, not shy. You will become more socially successful, and this will motivate you to continue your new social behavior until it becomes a habit. Try this for a month, in every situation you can. I am confident that you will become much more comfortable and outgoing.
One form of therapy is to go somewhere that nobody knows you, and deliberately make an utter fool of yourself: put on a paper hat, and yell out: "I'm queen/king of America!", or something else ridiculous, (make up your own - have some fun, safely) then get back in the taxi, (warn the driver of your intentions, first) or car, and leave. People will point, and say: "Look at that idiot". But, you may not be up to the stage where you can do that, yet (I can, and I used to be shy). Or, preferably in the company of a friend, or family member, on a different train, or bus route to your regular one, call out the names, or numbers of all the stops. It will teach you that, although it isn't actually pleasant, (EXPECT MODERATE DISCOMFORT) you will survive; be stronger for the experience, and the next time (should you need to repeat this type of therapy) will be considerably easier. Remember: "A fear avoided is a fear strengthened; a fear faced is a fear reduced." Regard it as your final test: once you have accomplished it, the barrier will be broken; just don't go too far, the other way! Learn to laugh at yourself, and give a big, cheesy grin when others see you do something foolish, as we all do, occasionally.
It is endearing, if you don't do it too often. Use positive affirmations: for example: "I am very likable and other people feel comfortable around me". Write down all of your self limiting beliefs; then write down the positive counter of them, (exact opposite) and repeat them and imprint them into your mind. Most importantly: Force yourself to approach somebody and initiate some sort of communication. Start out small by asking the time and directions and gradually go bigger. Although there are anti-anxiety medications (anxiolytics) available, these come with risks, and the possibility of side effects, habituation, even addiction, and withdrawal problems, and are unsuitable for young people.
Try having a cup of "Tension Tamer", herbal tea, by Celestial Seasonings, (from supermarket tea, or health food aisles) or make some at home, and cool, then bottle, and drink as needed (I find it so strong tasting, that I need to drink it quickly, followed by something like fruit juice, to take away the taste, but others may find it more tolerable). C(h)amomile tea is a more palatable option. As with all herbal/green teas, use lemon/lime, and/or a little sweetener (NOT ARTIFICIAL!!!) but no cream, or milk. Xylitol, or Stevia is preferable, (health food stores) or fruit sugar (fructose, such as "Fruisana", from supermarket sugar aisles)."
Has anyone used a buffer for discontinuation of sertraline? I cant get off the last 25mg dose without problems I have been trying to come off Zoloft for the last 3 months. I am on the last 25mg dosage (every second day) but experience head spins & vertigo problems, when i let it go to 3 days between tablets. Anyone know how long the side effects last, should I just deal with it for a day or two, or will it last a week or more??
Has anyone used a natural buffer to help ease the side effects of discontinuation? what were they? did they help? what about St Johns Wart?
My GP handed them to me when I was diagnosed with post natal depression & has given little advice since. I'm almost convinced that these GP's have shares in these companies because I was handed free samples, then and there in the GP's office (enough to get me dependent) and was told very little about the dependency and addictiveness of the drug. Any information would help.
thanks
spiritualjourneyseeker replied: "See if he can get you samples. I have not heard of Zoloft being addictive. I mean where you crave it or have life threatening withdrawal. 25mg is a low dose. Did your doctor just sayto stop now and the unpleasant effects will go away? If so, he's probably right.
Its best to work this out with the doc that prescribed you the Zoloft in the first place. Best wishes."
*charmer* replied: "I think St Johns Wort acts adversely with all or most anti-depressants.Check with your doc or pharmacist before you mix anything."
How long does sertraline/Lustral/Zoloft take to work? Can you see effects after just a couple of doses?
I started taking it yesterday and I feel much better, but I don't know if this is because of the meds or because I was just due a better mood.
steven s replied: "takes up to 4 weeks"
Pinky replied: "it will kick in after 2-4 weeks the thought of u takin it is more a pshycological effect than anything else - for it to be truly workin u need to give it more time"
Here to help replied: "Could take a couple of days to 3-4 weeks.
It all depends on the person."
suzyqvegas112200 replied: "You are having a good day. It can take anywhere between a week and a month. I love my zoloft it keeps me on an even mood path. I hope that it helps you a lot too."
somesayxo replied: "It takes 2-4 weeks. It takes that time to build up the level in your blood to an effective level. For some it's less, for other's it's more, thus the differences.
You will feel better though, that's the good news.
And I noticed the same thing the first day I took it. I think it's more of a placebo effect."
lovey1425 replied: "The "half life" of Zoloft (that means, the point at which a dose has reached its peak effectiveness) is two weeks. So, while you may be feeling better today it can be because you've finally started doing something about your condition.
Watch out, however -- as the depression begins to lift, some people find themselves moved to act out self-destructive thoughts that they were too down to act on before. Make sure someone you love and trust keeps an eye on you, at least for the first month or so of treatment.
By the way, I've been on Zoloft for 11 years. My life has made a 180 degree flip, and I am now the most content person I know. Not drugged out, or manic, but content and self-confident. Please give yourself and your treatment a chance. You are SO worth it!"
Mia replied: "Normally 2-4 weeks, I'm about to start this one myself.
You could be feeling better today, as maybe its a good day (you do get them, and as you get better you get more good days). Or you might be in a better because you are getting help, it feels good to get help. You may be seeing a way out of depression."
I have taken only one dose of Sertraline and I got a bad allergic reaction.? Hello I started taking Sertraline about 3 days ago.
And I had an allergic reaction to it and my dr took me straight off the drug... The dose was 50mg.
So i have only taken one pill.
For 2 days i couldnt sleep and i was nervious and shaky and couldnt eat anything.
Yesterday the shaking stopped a little and last night i could get some sleep, BUT i had scary dreams about myself getting hurt and my friends getting hurt.
I feel better today.
And I can now eat food without feeling like i want to vomit it all back.
So my question is...
How long is it likely that I will be having these withdrawal symptoms and what can i do to either put up with them or lessen them a little bit?
Trent replied: "wait it out and DONT take that medicine again"
Shōjo-ai replied: "I'm suprised you are reacting that bad to that small a dose but if you were alergic to it, this might just be something you need to cope with until it is totally out of your system.
One thing I have learned is that you need to REALLY focus on what you are feeling. I'm not saying that it isn't real, but when you have a horribe shock like an alergic reacion, the aftereffects can be heightened by the "Fear Factor" and towards the end, before everything is out of your system, there is a chance that you can think things are worse then they really are.
Keep your head about you and every time you feel something, focus on it and make sure it isn't a) a relapse of the alergic reaction (call 911 if it is this) or b) your mind keeping you feeling these things because you expect to feel these things.
Good luck and remember... EVERYONE is alergic to at least ONE THING... Most of us are just lucky enough to never find out what that one thing may be.
(I'm alergic to the baby shots... If I would have gotten the second course, I would have had brain damage!)"
what is the best dosage on generic Zoloft (sertraline ) to take to make it work? I took 25mg.. now i am on 50,,, what is the dose that is the best to feel the great effects of it working... ( i have severe PMDD) so that is why i am on it now.
Just curious.....
kristinmay replied: "That is between you and your doctor. The funny thing about it is that alot of the time you don't know it's helping until you go off of it and start to feel like $hit again. Then there's the tolerance factor. But that usually stems over years. I, myself, am on 150. But then again, I have been on it for 10 years. Yes, I have had increase my dosage, but I would not give it up for anything."
vaughn favrua replied: "i just stopped taking it. it helps a little bit. same as the real thing but no different"
